In an interview with Bloomberg’s Francine Lacqua and Haslinda Amin at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Volkswagen AG CEO Herbert Diess discussed his talk with President Donald Trump over proposed auto tariffs on European automobiles, his outlook for the industry in 2020 and competition with electric car marker Tesla.
What caught my attention is his hope of taking over that first place that Tesla CEO sits on, in the not so far away future.
When asked about who he thinks will win the race of transportation and space, weather it would be the traditional auto makers or tech giants like Google, “I think its an open race, I will take Tesla more seriously than Google” – Diess answered.
“I think 2020 will be a breakthrough year for electric car because also the legislation is demanding greater percentage of electric car in Europe, USA and China, so 2020/2021 should be a decisive year” – Diess.
“Renewable energy is already as cheap as carbon based energy” – Diess
