On Tuesday, Elon Musk’s private space company SpaceX (space exploration technologies corporation) completed 150-Meter Hop of Starship SN5 in Boca Chica, Texas.
The 30-meter-high aircraft is a slimmed-down version of the spacecraft that SpaceX plans to use to fly to Mars and the moon in the future. It is 9 meters wide and consists of a fuel tank and a Raptor engine.
SpaceX was founded in 2002 by Elon Musk to reduce space transportation costs to enable the colonization of Mars.
On Monday, NASA completed a triumphant return to U.S. space travel as SpaceX’s Dragon capsule plopped into the Gulf of Mexico with two astronauts, successfully concluding the company’s first crewed test flight to the International Space Station.
“Today we really made history,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said at a news conference with SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell and the four astronauts who will fly aboard the first regular flight to the space station later this year. “We are entering a new era of human spaceflight.”. “This is really just the beginning,” Shotwell said. “We are starting the journey of bringing people regularly to and from low-earth orbit.”
Starship SN5 150 Meters Hop Test
On Tuesday, a huge reusable spaceship being designed by SpaceX, which will one day fly humans to moon to make humans multi-planetary species, went through a series of successful tests. Spaceship SN5 flew to a height of roughly 500 feet, then made a controlled descent to a nearby landing pad.
The 500-foot (150-meter) “hop” test was the first of a Starship rocket with full-size propellant tanks, and it sets the stage for a series of progressively higher atmospheric demonstration flights with future vehicles. Eventually, SpaceX aims to shoot the Starship into orbit on top of an even taller booster rocket named the “Super Heavy” to deliver to space huge cargo loads, satellites, telescopes, and science probes.
So What Is Next ?
“We’ll do several short hops to smooth out launch process, then go high altitude with body flaps” says, CEO Elon Musk
“V1.1 legs will be ~60% longer. V2.0 legs will be much wider & taller — like Falcon, but capable of landing on unimproved surfaces & auto-leveling.” Musk added.
Must also confirmed that SpaceX will soon do a hop and a relight. i.e. – land and take off again.
